Historic Climate Change Accord Signed

Missouri a No Show

Nine Midwestern governors including Kathleen Sebelius signed the Midwestern Regional Greenhouse Gas Reduction Accord on Thursday to establish regional greenhouse gas reduction goals and initiatives and promote renewable energy.

The accord was part of an energy summit held by the Midwestern Governors Association on Wednesday and Thursday.

Twelve states, including Kansas and Missouri, make up the association.

While the governors of Nebraska and North Dakota did not sign the accord, they joined the other states in adopting an Energy Security and Climate Stewardship Platform that establishes timelines to advance energy efficiency and the development of coal and carbon capture and storage.

Only the state of Missouri did not participate either in the summit or in the months-long work of developing the agreements, said Matt Canter, spokesman for Gov. Jim Doyle of Wisconsin, chairman of the association.

Gov. Matt Blunt's office did not return telephone calls and emails requesting a response.

Other members of the association are South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.
