Re: Case #EW-2004-0596

Dear Commissioner Davis:

I am writing in regards to KCP&L’s proposal for a new coal-burning power plant just 30 miles north of Kansas City. I am sure you are aware of the negative health impacts associated with burning coal with even the best available technology. Mercury poisoning of our unborn, asthma in our children, and now studies say heart disease in adults are just a few of the consequences.

This new plant could also harm the economy of the Kansas City area. The rate increase that would be required for such a huge project could dampen growth. Promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy would be the lowest cost option for our area.

The August primaries would indicate that the people of Missouri are concerned about additional coal-burning generation. In Platte County, both incumbent county commissioners that promoted the new plant were voted out. In Springfield, the citizens voted down financing of their proposed plant. Columbia voted to require renewable energy.

I want to see electricity used more efficiently, so the lights stay on and the refrigerator runs, but without the harmful health consequences and pollution associated with wasteful electricity consumption. Please give KCPL incentives to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy. Please give KCPL incentives to clean up their current coal-burning plants.

Respectfully,
