The good - Cars and light trucks must average 35 mpg by 2020, effectively phases out incandescent light bulbs by 2020, and increases energy efficiency standards for buildings. The Kansas City Kansas Board of Public Utilities announced it won't be building a new coal-burning power plant. They are now investigating a less polluting natural gas fired plant. Why? Coal has gotten too expensive. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/story/394802.html.

Gov. Blunt signs parts of the Midwest Climate Accord

Last month, Gov. Blunt was the only governor of 12 not to sign any part of or even attend the Midwest Governor's Associations energy meeting focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This month, he stuck his toe in the water and signed parts of the agreement - just not the main parts. He refused to sign sections that would commit Missouri to a program to reduce emissions and rely on more renewable electricity sources. http://www.kansascity.com/344/story/411222.html.

Warren Buffett's PacifiCorp says no to new coal plants

PacifiCorp has backed away from plans to build any new coal plants within the next 10 years, conceding that coal no longer can overcome tightening regulations and environmental opposition. PacifiCorp cited as reasons for its decision: The likelihood of national carbon emissions legislation, which it said makes accurate cost projections and risk assessment for coal plants "futile," and the fact that most of the coal plants proposed around the United States recently have been canceled, denied permits or been involved in protracted litigation.
